Mt. Marathon is situated in Seward, Alaska which rests on the shores of Resurrection Bay on the Kenai Peninsula. Like other hikes, this proved to be a winner! We made this a half day hike, but we suggest bringing your tent and plan to do an overnight to take full advantage of the views and additional hikes.

Scott, I’m a long listener of the Alaska PodShow and a smack on the backside for producing such brilliant work on your hike of the week show. The wife an I are taking a holiday to Alaska summer 2008 and we appreciate these hikes immensely.
You always ask for suggestions: We’re deathly afraid of the idea bumping into a grizzly bear and with your mention of your own recent near encounter perhaps you demonstrate the best action to take in a bear situation for us Scottish lowlanders. Could you produce that?
It’s a great show Scott and a hello to your friend LeLinda all the same!

Well, you did it again. That was an awesome hike. Just beautiful and very enjoyable. Keep up the good work and know that the pleasure of your work is being enjoyed by many a person. I know I have “all in the family” watching and waiting for what will be next. Good Luck!

Now that was a hike! We took on the Mt. Marathon challenge September 29 this year and found ourselves stretched on this one. I would love to see how someone gets up and down in ~43 minutes ( the current record ) Even the record of 11 minutes to get down is hard to believe. Although the city hospital is right at the bottom of the mountain trailhead so maybe they just roll. There is no easy part to this trail except maybe sliding in the shale on the way down. It took us a full 2 hours to get up and a good hour+ to come down. The distances are decieving especially once you reach the 1/2 way mark where the trees and shrubbery end and rock/shale/low grass begins. Definately a good half day+ hike and don’t plan to do anything for a while after you’re down.

Clarification to previous post. After watching the “hike of the week” video I realized I was posting to a different part of the Mt. Marathon hike. We took the race trail. Somehow we missed the sign to the falls trail. But hey, we’ll enjoy that another year.
